AUGUST 2014 - Jake and Lily by Jerry Spinelli - a good read for older elementary and middle school students

“As I was wandering around the beach that day, in and out of all those people and blankets, it felt as if Jake was walking right beside me.  As if he was poking me in the ribs and saying, ‘Look at that! … Look at that!’  I guess it had been that way all our life, but the beach day brought it to our attention.”  Lily pg. 54-55, Jake and Lily

Twins Jake and Lily always do everything together; they play together, share a room, and even think together, they know when the other one is in trouble or needs help, they can finish each others sentences, they might even share a special magical power.  However, the summer before their sixth grade year, everything changes when Jake starts spending all his time with a group of boys in the neighborhood and Lily feels like she is losing her twin brother, her other half, her best-friend.  Luckily for Lily, their Poppy has just moved in down the street and he knows a little about being lonely and having the courage to go out there and be yourself.  But, while Lily is trying to deal with her loneliness, Jake has some developing problems of his own when one of his friends turns out to be the neighborhood bully. Can the twins learn to make new friends, nice new friends and, can they learn to be friends with each other again, while still having their own lives?

In Jake and Lily by Jerry Spinelle, Jake becomes friends with a boy in the neighborhood who turns out to be a bully.  He doesn’t bully Jake, but Jake becomes involved in his bullying of others.
