February 2014 - The School for Good & Evil by Soman Chainani - a great read for Middle Schooler's who like fantasy!

“No wonder princesses were so impotent in fairy tales she thought.  If all they could do was smile, stand straight, and speak to squirrels, then what choice did they have but to wait for a boy to rescue them?”  pg. 128 Agatha The School for Good & Evil

Sophie, confident and beautiful in her pink gowns, and Agatha, grumpy and not so beautiful in her dull black, best friends who couldn’t be more opposite.  Sophie believes she is destined to be a princess and looks forward to the day she will be kidnapped and taken to the School for Good; she also believes Agatha will go with her, chosen for the School for Evil, best friends escaping the dull town of Gavaldon for a new and better life.  But when the time comes to be taken away to the infamous school that trains princes, princesses, witches and warlocks for their future rolls in famous fairy tales, it’s not all glass slippers and sweet smelling roses.  One friend in the School for Good and one friend in the School for Evil, but does the mysterious school master have it right, does he really know the best place for both girls?  Best friends battling the forces of good and evil hoping to write their own happily ever after!

The School for Good & Evil by Soman Chainani isn’t your typical fairy tale, sure it has plenty of beautiful girls wishing for their perfect prince; plenty of suave, sword carrying princes willing to protect that perfect princess; and of course plenty of ugly witches, hairy beasts and magical curses; but it also has plenty of twists and turns, as Sophie and Agatha try desperately to re-write the rules of fairy tales.
