The first slaves arrived in Jamestown, Virginia in 1619, and by the Civil War there were over 4 million slaves in the United States. Almost as early as there were slaves, there were citizens who opposed slavery. The term Underground Railroad has become a symbolic term given to the routes slaves used to escape to freedom. This program will detail the history of the Underground Railroad, focusing on Ohio's participation.
