Following the completion of a new Master Plan in 1965, the City of Barberton began to look for ways to renovate the downtown area, including urban renewal. Urban renewal is a community-based improvement program intended to modernize a city’s infrastructure, services, and buildings. The City planned to use federal urban renewal funds to complete needed, but expensive projects, such as building a new fire station, repairing streets, and constructing the Robinson Avenue viaduct.
