South Barberton, previously known as Snydertown, has played an important role in the growth of Barberton. Snydertown was founded by George M. Snyder whose family were early settlers in the area and owned a family farm. On February 12, 1918, the County Commissioner heard a petition for the annexation of the Snydertown area to Barberton. As soon as Snydertown became part of Barberton, it was guaranteed better sanitation, fire and police protection, water supply, sewage, streets, and school system.
